A Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) thangka is a sacred Tibetan painting, often featuring the Guru surrounded by or incorporating the mantra “Om Ah Hum Vajra Guru Padma Siddhi Hum”. He was a tantric Buddhist master born in India and he played a fundamental role in bringing Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet in the eighth century. Guru Rinpoche is also the founder of the Nyingma school, the oldest of the four major traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Used for meditation and devotion, these paintings often depict him palace holding a vajra and skull-cup, representing the transformation of negative energies and the attainment. Guru Rinpoche is depicted in his more traditional representation seated in royal posture holding a vajra in his right hand while his left-hand holds a skull-cup containing a vase filled with the nectar of longevity and wisdom. He is worshiped to remove obstacles to worldly or spiritual accomplishments and to avert harm from spirits or non-human entitie.
