Avalokiteshvara, also known as Chenrezig is the revered Bodhisattva of Compassion in Tibetan Buddhism. Thangka paintings of Chenrezig, also known as Avalokiteshvara, is one of the most revered deities in Mahayana Buddhism. As a bodhisattva, Chenrezig has achieved complete enlightenment but chooses to remain in the world, aiding all sentient beings in their path to liberation. His compassion is boundless, and he is often depicted with multiple arms, each holding a tool to assist in his mission of salvation.
Chenrezig’s vow to not enter the blissful state of Nirvana until all beings are liberated exemplifies his deep commitment to compassion. In Mahayana Buddhism, compassion is seen as an equal partner with wisdom, highlighting the universal nature of this path, where all beings, not just monks, can attain enlightenment.
He is known as one of the most important figure in Tibetan Buddhism because he is the embodiment of compassion of all the Buddhas and bodhisattvas of three times. When ever we are compassionate, or feel the love of another directed as you, be they human or animal, we experience our connection with Chenrezig.
His body color is pristine and radiant like color of conch. His two front hands are in a devotional gesture, joined together in front of his jewel-draped heart. His upper right hand holds his special symbol, a crystal akshamala, or rosary, symbol of the never-ending cycle. While his left hand holds a white lotus, signifying that he frees the sentient beings from the muddy waters of suffering and hellish realms to the pure states of enlightenment. He is draped in silk garments, both legs in the “diamond pose” of mediation, and seated on a row of lotus petals.
